How to Configure the Solar Panels for Your Solar Water Pump System?

Jul 30, 2026

How to Configure the Solar Panels for Your Solar Water Pump System?

To ensure efficient and stable operation of your solar pump inverter, please follow the core principle:
“Prioritize Voltage Requirements, Then Fulfill Power Demand.”

Step 1: Determine Inverter Voltage Class & Corresponding String Voltage Range
For 220V Inverters: Total VOC per string should be between 330V - 440V.
For 380V Inverters: Total VOC per string should be between 550V - 800V.

Step 2: Calculate the Number of Panels per String
Based on the open-circuit voltage (VOC) of a single panel:
Min. Panels ≥ Inverter's Min. Required Voltage /Single Panel VOC
Max. Panels ≤ Inverter's Max. Allowed Voltage / Single Panel VOC

Configuration Example:
Inverter: SP800-004G-4 (380V model)
Solar Panel: 450W, with VOC = 39.3V

1.Meet Voltage Requirement:
Min. Panels: 550V /39.3V ≈ 14 panels (round up)
Max. Panels: 800V /39.3V ≈ 20 panels (round down)
Result: Configure 14 to 20 panels per string.

2.Verify Power Requirement:
Inverter Power: 4kW (assuming SP800-004G-4 is 4kW)
Required Total Solar Power: 4kW × 1.5 = at least 6kW

Check:
With 14 panels: Total Power = 14 × 450W = 6.3kW (Meets requirement)
With 20 panels: Total Power = 20 × 450W = 9.0kW (Exceeds requirement)

Step 3: Final Configuration Options
Cost-effective Solution: 1 string of 14-16 panels. Meets all requirements with optimized initial investment.
High-redundancy / All-day Solution: 1 string of 18-20 panels. Provides stronger performance and longer running times during low-light conditions.
Large System Solution: For more than 20 panels, use multiple parallel strings (with a combiner box), ensuring each string's voltage is within the specified range.
